Excerpt from Two Sermons Delivered in Bradford, Second Parish, January 5, 1812: And Afterwards in Two Other Places The subsequent discourses will doubtless be received as the hasty production of an inexperienced youth. - Such, they are acknowledged to be. As such, let them, escape the severity of the critic: As such let them claim the candour of the public. Their favourable reception, when delivered, was owing more perhaps to the novelty of their subject, than to any intrinsic worth in the performance. In addition to the request of hearers, it has been suggested by judicious friends that their publication may be instrumental of quickening "by way of remembrance, the pure minds" of some christian Parents and of calling up the attention of some irreligious Parents with respect to the importance of family devotion and family instruction. And that they may perhaps be instrumental of leading some to consider the impropriety, criminality, and dangerous consequences of their conduct, when opposing, the Partners of their joys and sorrows in their wishes to live religion. Whether there are sufficient reasons for their public appearance, must be submitted to the decision of the candid reader. That a Divine Blessing may render these discourses in some humble degree useful, is the ardent prayer of the Author.
