Excerpt from Stories of the Old Dominion: From the Settlement to the End of the Revolution In these stories I mean to tell you some interesting incidents in the history of Virginia, which, in former times, was called the "Old Dominion." Many of these I look upon as more striking than fiction - that is, than stories which are not true, and only written to amuse people. You cannot find them easily in the long histories of Virginia; and when you do find them, little is said about many of them, and that little is buried in words. I do not mean to speak ill of the histories, but I must say they are not very interesting to me. As much time is taken to tell us what is dull and commonplace, as to relate the striking events which everybody should know about. This is wrong, I think. There is wheat and there is wheat and if you mix them both together the wheat is of no value. It is better to clean up the wheat and skim the cream from the milk of history - that is, dwell on the interesting scenes, and say little of the unimportant ones. This I mean to try and do in my book. I shall aim to tell you the most striking events in the annals of the "Old Dominion," and leave the rest to take care of themselves.
