Full of defects as the work is, it is, I venture to say, an honest autobiography, in which, in accordance with its name and professed purport, "self" is the all-pervading topic, whether for good or evil. I mention this because some even of my friends have expressed disappointment that I have not entered upon sundry subjects of general importance, which they kindly think I might have been qualified to discuss. Thus, the crow which I watched from my window finds his place in my pages, whilst the Afghan war and the Bengal famine are unnoticed.
