In December, 1869, a call for a meeting at which measures should be taken for the organization of the Association was signed by nearly two hundred and fifty members of the Bar, in which it was stated that such an association would lead to the creation of more intimate relations between the members "of the legal profession than now exist, and would at the same time sustain the profession in its proper position in the community and thereby enable it in many ways to promote the interests of the public."
