Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Refutation of the Charge of Abolitionism: Brought by David Henshaw, and His Partizans, Against the Hon. Marcus Morton "Quousque tandem abutere, Catalina, patientia nostra? quamdiu nos etiam furor iste tuus eludet? quern ad fuiem sese effrenata jactabit audacia?" - Cicero´s Oration. The recent series of attacks upon the Hon. Marcus Morton, distinguished as he is by his deservedly lofty position in the Democratic Party, made by a few self-seeking politicians, with David Henshaw at their head, a man whose chief notoriety at the present time, is based upon his having disconnected himself from the party to which he professedly belonged, to gratify a most Sancho Panza-like ambition for power, would naturally lead one to inquire, not only as to their source and history, but also their cause. I propose now to speak of the Henshaw party, so called, from whom these attacks have eminated; and glance briefly as possible at its origin and character; - that the charges brought against Marcus Morton may be the better understood and replied to. Concerning Mr. Henshaw himself, little will be said, except in connexion with that selfish few, whose head he voluntarily assumes to be. The remark once made by his favorite press, distinguishing one well known in the Democratic party as a "Soldier of Fortune," applies most aptly to him. He is indeed that soldier of fortune, who with a most Quxotic delusion, presented his claims before the United States Senate for an office, to which, under a Democratic Administration, he dared not aspire; and was there thrust out. At this result of his assurance, no one was surprised; the universal Democratic party thought it just. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
