Warner surprised and saddened large numbers of people in Boston and vicinity, who not only valued him as an accomplished and skillful physician, but also loved him as a friend. He came to Boston some twenty-five years ago, from St. Louis, where he had had a large and lucrative practice. The main reason of his coming to New England was to improve his impaired health. He soon entered again upon the practice of his profession, making his home in Newton, but having his office in Boston. He easily made acquaintances and friends, and his large success and high reputation as a physician were quickly assured. Yet it never seemed to be his purpose to make, his profession a means of amassing wealth It was his joy to save people from suffering; if he could do that he seemed satisfied. In the last conversation I had with him, not many days before his death, he spoke to me of a difficult surgical operation he had been called to perform, and added the remark that, on account of his poor health he would not have undertaken the work.
