Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Second Index to Book-Prices Current, Vol. 11: For the Years 1897 to 1906 The season 1908-9, the activities of which are reflected in this volume, owes its importance in a very great degree to the sale of the Library of the late Lord Amherst of Hackney, held partly in December and partly in March. This Library was of exceptional importance, and the report given of its sale is, on that account, as complete as it could be made without importing matter which, for one reason or another, would be of little interest from the peculiar point of view from which the preparation of Book-Prices Current has been undertaken since its commencement. Other important sales comprised those of a Miscellaneous character held on December 17th, March 18th and July 13th, the fine collection of Manuscripts of May 6th, the portion of the Library of Lord Polwarth sold on February 15th, and the Library of Lord Dormer which, with other properties, was dispersed on May 20th. The Beaufoy Library, the sale of which was commenced by Messrs. Christie, Manson and Woods on June 7th, must also be added to the list. At these sales many very expensive books changed hands, and but for the private disposition of all the Caxtons in the Amherst Library the record as given in the following pages would have been very materially added to, especially with regard to the total sum realised. As events turned out, I find that £129,654 was obtained for 36,083 lots, this disclosing an average of £3 11s. 10d., as against £2 13s. 1d. in 1907-8, £4 4s. 2d. in 1906-7, £2 11s. 3d. in 1905-6, and £2 17s. 2d. in 1904-5. A complete list of the averages from 1893, when the system was first turned to practical use, to 1906 will be found in the introduction to the twentieth volume of Book-Prices Current, and it is not necessary to say anything further on the subject here except that these records of a series of years, when tabulated and compared, furnish, so far as they go, a good general idea of the ups and downs of the book-market at varying periods.
