Excerpt from Select List of References on Impeachment The first edition of this list was prepared at the time of the trial of Judge Charles Swayne in 1904. This second edition is issued to meet a similar need occasioned by the impeachment proceedings against Judge Robert W.Archbald. A simple classification of the material has been made by arranging separately, under appropriate headings, writings devoted to any particular trial. Reports of the trials of the following will be found arranged in chronological order: William Blount, John Pickering, Samuel Chase, James H.Peck, West H.Humphreys, Andrew Johnson, William W.Belknap, Charles Swayne, Robert W.Archbald. A brief section on impeachment in English law,, with a few references to the trials of Warren Hastings and Lord Melville, have been included as indicating the source of much of our own procedure. Writers on the Constitution noted in the list are Curtis, Foster, Hare, Miller, Paschal, Pomeroy, Rawle, Story, Sutherland, Tucker, Watson and Willoughby. The historical development of the constitutional provisions for impeachment is set forth in the Federalist, in the Debates of the Federal Convention of 1787, as reported by Madison, and in Farrand´s Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, The latter includes a full index on the impeachment clauses of the Constitution, volume 3, pages 635-636. Fosters Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States gives probably the best historical statement of impeachment in this country.
