Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Sir Walter Raleigh There never was a time when so many great men lived in England as in the ´spacious times´ of Queen Elizabeth. Our hearts thrill with pride when we read about those gallant men: those soldiers, seamen, and merchant-adventurers, great poets, play-writers, and scholars, of whom Shakespeare was the greatest of all. It must have been a glorious time to live in, we think, that time when there were new worlds to discover, and when nearly every crew that set sail in their ships from British harbours went on a voyage of discovery, and reached unknown countries overseas and saw strange beasts and found wonderful treasures - gold nuggets, pearls and coral - which the sailors brought home with them to their humble native fishing villages. Near one of these little villages on the red coast of Devon there stood (and it stands to-day) a pleasant farm-house with thatched gabled roof, and latticed diamond-paned windows on either side of a carved stone porch. A long sunny garden path, flagged with white stones and flanked with sunflowers, hollyhocks and tall white lilies, leads up to the oaken door with its big iron nails and massive knocker. This house is Hayes Farm, near Budleigh-Salterton, famous as the birthplace of one of the most picturesque heroes of the Elizabethan period - Walter Raleigh, who was born there in the wainscotted chamber above the porch.
