Excerpt from Men and Ghosts I had thought of telling my story - if it be a story - from the outside, but I want to make it intimate and searching; I want to get at the truth, though truth, I know, is hydra-headed. It is not always shapely, and what there is of the artist in me may lead sometimes to the attempt at form; the most ingenuous of us cannot be a mechanical recorder. It is all in my mind and imagination must bring it to light. I do want to shape it for her, I want to re-create it. This episode of my life which it now seems to me is my life - must be set down in such order and sequence as I can accomplish. It is too precious to lose and it is better to take the chance of its becoming fixed and finite in the narrative than that it should be dim. I am not thinking of my friends or the public or the shadowy posterity to which what is vain and grandiose in one might wish to appeal. Yet one has to die some day and to leave everything, and when the time comes one will be reluctant to clear out of the old world; even a few thoughts and imaginings scrawled on paper give a sort of hold.
