Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Matchmakers Mrs. Hewitt lay on the sofa by the window with the light on her book and the fire gently warming her toes. It would have seemed more remarkable had she been doing anything else. Mr. Hewitt sat in his study trying to make a screen of holy thoughts between his mind and the household bills, so that he could more convincingly write of the peace which passes understanding in his Easter sermon. Old Stocks, the odd man, prodded gently at the lettuce bed, fearful as ever lest he should hurt the soil from which he sprang. For Stockses had lived at Little Pendleton through many, many generations, and he no doubt instinctively felt, with the churchyard only just over the hedge, that he might be prodding the ashes of an ancestor. Mary, the maid of all work, was kneeling on the kitchen floor beside a sick chicken, trying to tempt its failing appetite with a little tea, because she was full of a divine, ill-regulated kindness towards everything ill or old, and she felt sure that good, strong, treacly tea must cheer up anything that breathed. Her grate and herself remained in morning toilette. Jack, the boy of the family, aged eight, whose late advent had given Mrs. Hewitt a plausible reason for occupying the sofa permanently, was at the lane-end fighting Bobby Parker.
