Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Second Letter From a Country Whig: To His Friend in London; Relating to the Matter of Impeachments, &C It is with Grief I consider in what Manner the Freeholders and People in general have testified their Affections and Inclinations, which I must still impute to our own ill Management; and tho´ we have made a Shift to secure the Majority of Electors in the greater Part of the Burroughs, yet the Behaviour of the Bulk of the Inhabitants, has but too much discover´d which Way the Byass would have run, if the Bowls had been suffer´d to take their natural Course; what is the Meaning then, that altho´ the Temper of the Nation appears so visible; our People talk at such a Rate as makes my Ears tingle when I hear them, are they our Enemies which set these Things about, to make us look Odious, and ruin our Cause, or does Prosperity turn our Brains - Tell me, Sir, Are new and needless Wars, heavy Taxes, Swarms of Foreigners, Divisions, Blood and Murder, to be our promised Blessings? Are we to cut each others Throats to preserve the publick Peace, beggar the Nation, to make us happy, or is sacrificing our Liberties the Way to preserve them? I hope that many of those Things, which are now the Subject of Discourse, are without Foundation, and therefore I shall at present take no farther Notice of them, but confine my self to that which is now loudest and most generally talk´d of, I mean the Business of Impeachments.
