As the leaders, so the followers; and if this attempt to place before the public a simple record of the lives of some of the more prominent Royalists should serve to remove this popular misconception from the minds of any, the main purpose of the writer will be accomplished. Another object has been the analysis of the motives which led men of such varying characters and ideals to adopt the Royalists´ cause, and thus to form a veritable "Cloud of Witnesses" attesting the good faith of the King. In conclusion, I should wish to express my deep sense of gratitude to Mr. Armstrong, of Queen´s College, Oxford, without the stimulus of whose advice and encouragement the work would not have been attempted.
