My aim has been to write an English, not a pseudo-Greek play. The plot being a "free fantasia" upon the prehistoric legend, I have not been solicitous about an accurate delineation of the manners and customs of any historic period. My Thessaly is the Arcadian region of a Greece almost as purely ideal as Shakespeare´s Bohemia, or Forest of Arden; and to the sympathetic readers imagination I trust the frank anachronism between modern sentiments and their legendary setting.
