We have besides these a number of prelates who might be spoken of as "literary bishops." As a rule, however, when they become bishops, they cease to be literary. According to that lying chronicler, Gregorio Leti, on whom Robertson based the untrustworthy work which passes current as the "History of Charles the Fifth," Sixtus the Fifth, when he attained the Papacy, thrust away the ladder by which he attained to it.
