"Behind the Scenes in Warring Germany," my first book, was obviously the virginal impression of war upon one American - myself. From living with the German armies in the field, getting to know the human side of the men, being under fire with them, I developed a strong personal sympathy for them. Some, therefore, called the picture, - "pro-German." But on my second trip to Germany at war, I sought to know the cities and villages - to know the people, free from the comradeship that is bound to come at the front. I saw things and heard things and doubted and withheld them for objective analysis - and then I went again, a third time, to the zone of war. And I found then a road; and the road led to Imperial Germany. And as I went down it, I understood many things of the Germans and the German Empire, and how the one is utterly different from the other. In the pages that follow, I have - I believe - written of the German Kaiser in a disinterested way. To do that is to invite abuse; but I have been truthful to myself.
