Excerpt from Journal of the British Archaeological Association, Established 1843, Vol. 7: For the Encouragement and Prosecution of Researches Into the Arts and Monuments of the Early and Middle Ages In 1835, Thomas Gisborne, esq., M.P. for Derbyshire, disposed of a large tract of wild desert land in Charnwood Forest, called the Tynte, or Tin Meadows, situate twelve miles from Ratæ (Leicester), and in a direct line between that place and Derventio (Little Chester), to certain monks of the Cistercian order, who commenced the establishment of the abbey of St. Bernard. Its foundation was undertaken by the reverend father Odillo Woolfrey, presbyter; father Bernard Palmer, presbyter; brother Luke, brother Xavier, and brother Augustine, lay brethren. Charnwood comprises a district of about ten miles in breadth and six in width, and anciently formed part of the forest of Arden. It is intersected by a Roman road, or one of British formation afterwards used by the Romans; and at different times various Roman antiquities have been discovered in its locality. There is good ground for believing that Charnwood Forest was well wooded as late as the seventeenth century, and that it contained an abundance of oaks.
