Excerpt from United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Vol. 11: Transcript of Record Q. Well, was there a single case of any entryman or entrywoman who is named in the bill of complaint, was located under any different circumstances? A. Oh, yes. Q. Well, I mean if so - I will call your attention to it later. I mean any one that you had anything to do with. Was it on the same basis that you were to receive a hundred dollars for locating them, and take a mortgage? A. No, sir, there were some that went through that themselves, but I assisted them all the same, all that I could, without the payment of a hundred dollars. Q. Well, can you now state as to whether there was a single one of the entrymen or entrywomen that are named in the bill of complaint, that did in fact give you a mortgage? A. No, I think not. Q. Well, you know that there was not one that did, don´t you? A. I think there were none. Q. And so, in any case where there was a loan made, it was made without a mortgage security or note of any kind. By Mr. Bickford. - The witness has already testified to that, and we object to it. A. Well, I wish to say that there were notes given to me in some instances for the money that I had advanced; quite a number of instances.
