It comprises the notes which I have used in lecturing to men at Oxford who were reading for the Honour School of Theology. It has no further aim than to furnish a convenient summary which may be of some service to any theological students who are interested in the period covered by its pages. I am very largely indebted throughout the book to the able monograph of M. Etienne Chastel, published at Geneva in 1850. Mr. S. G.
