Excerpt from Essay on the Prevailing Methods of the Evangelization of the Non-Christian World I commence with quotations from esteemed authors: "He is the truest friend of any institution, who calmly but fearlessly points out its defects and its aberrations from the way of truth. The ostrich-policy of shutting one´s eyes to patent facts may answer for a time, but in the end it is disastrous. ´Open rebuke is better than secret love,´ when rebuke is needed. The only essential qualification is, that the rebuke or protest be uttered in a brotherly and Christian spirit." "When the current of popular opinion seems to be running very strongly in one direction, many are tempted to follow the easy course of swimming with the stream. This may be pleasant and profitable, but it cannot be right. There are times, when even those, who most dislike controversy, may feel it a duty to speak if, as in the present instance, they are not invited to do so. If a cause seems to them to be a true one, it is mere pusillanimity to let the love of personal ease prevail, and to suffer it to be lost by acquiescence and default." Some are content to swim with the tide, and never oppose abuses: In my youth I knew Clergymen, who held three or four livings, and Deaneries as well: they used to say that it would last their time: some have the misfortune to see further ahead, and to be about ten years in advance of their colleagues. Erasmus was one of these: "Bona verba quæso" is the motto of the compiler of a Missionary-Report: it is, in fact, of the same genus as an election-placard: Euphemism supplies the place of historical completeness, or intelligent criticism, for such might give offence to some supporter, or wound the feelings of the relatives of the individual Missionary, whose conduct is disapproved of. It is complacently observed in some Reports, that in such matters the men and women actually engaged are the most competent judges of their own policy and proceedings.
