You will therefore find none of the polish which cultivation would have bestowed on my now humble style of writing, if style it can be called; but if you should prefer the plain unvarnished tale to the flowing period, here you have it, in such a dress as becomes an Englishman of humble birth and very moderate means, who was once dissatisfied with his own Country, and tried America in the hope of bettering his condition, how these hopes were disappointed you will perceive in the few following pages, which contain a fair representation of what I actually saw; and I request you to believe that they are published simply with a view to take from the eyes of my Countrymen, the film of delusion which once obscured my own vision.
