Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The First General Conference of Lutherans in America: Held in Philadelphia, December 27-29, 1898; Proceedings, Essays and Debates Only with the publication of the proceedings and papers of the General Conference of 1898 can its significance be properly estimated. Such interest was elicited that there has been much premature discussion based upon the meagre press reports and the various impressions of participants and visitors. This volume enables the Convention to be carefully studied, and makes its appeal to future generations of Lutherans whom it will influence. Apart from their place in the Conference the papers are of themselves of permanent value. The committee having sincerely endeavored to secure representatives of the various tendencies within their several bodies, if any element was not represented it was due to the declinature of some originally invited to respond. Although the essayists were limited in the reading of their essays, no such restriction was placed upon the copy furnished for publication. The remarks after the essays, not being stenographically reported, were reproduced from memory, and, in some cases, more fully elaborated by some of the speakers, while, in the failure of others to do the same service, they are passed by. The discussions given are rather records of the matured opinions of the speakers than exact reproductions of what was said. While every one, therefore, is responsible for what is attributed to him no argument from silence can be just.
