Excerpt from The Mystical Poets of the English Church The author was led to begin the studies which preceded the writing of this book by the words of Dr. Inge in the Preface to his Bampton Lectures on Christian Mysticism: "In verse the lofty idealism and strong religious bent of our race have produced a series of poet-mystics such as no other country can rival; it has not been possible in these Lectures to do justice to George Herbert, Vaughan the Silurist, Quarles, Crawshaw, and others who have all drunk of the same well." It would be ludicrous for the present writer to hope to emulate, in the remotest degree, Dr. Inge´s brilliant scholarship and philosophic insight. As a matter of fact, this book is little more than an Anthology compiled from the mystical poets of the English Church, with briefer extracts from some outside that communion. Wherever possible, the compiler has elucidated the extracts by quotations from the prose-writings of the respective poets themselves. This method obviates the danger, which is a very real one to-day, that the writings of the mystics themselves should be neglected in favour of what others say about them.
