The subject was originally touched on by the writer in a paper communicated by him to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and published by them in their Proceedings for the years 1885-86, Vol. VIII., New Series, pp. 190-200. Even yet, although much new matter has been added, the writer feels that he has only furnished an imperfect contribution to the ecclesiastical doings of a century associated with the heroic names of Wallace and Bruce, and rich with many striking and important events in the Medieval History of Scotland.
