Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby; The Heroes or Greek Fairy Tales for My Children Although at first sight these two books may seem to some to have little in common, the one a plea for the study of Natural Science, the other a fairy tale, yet they are profoundly similar in spirit; for both are founded upon that deep and reverent love of nature which was so essential a part of my father´s being. It is a little difficult for the present generation with all its scientific equipment - its "nature study," its courses of botany, its "Bird and Tree" competitions, its cameras, its prizes, its articles on natural history in every parish magazine, its mania for shooting every rare bird, for collecting every rare butterfly, flower, and fern, to their utter destruction, alas! in too many spots - it is difficult, I say, for this generation to believe the complete ignorance of cultivated, as well as uncultivated, English men and women on these subjects fifty years ago. For, ´when´ "Glaucus" was written in the winter of 1854-5, the "Study of Natural History" was an almost unknown quantity in the lives of all classes in England. Therefore the aquarium which my father started for the amusement of his young children and to further his own scientific observations, during a long absence from Eversley at Torquay on account of my mother´s health, was regarded as an extraordinary curiosity.
