Excerpt from Empire-Builders: A Course of Lectures These lectures - which may either be delivered verbatim, or serve as the quarry out of which schoolmasters can hew their own materials - have been written with a twofold purpose: first, to give some account of a few of the great men of the Empire; and secondly, to suggest that the success of their work, whether consciously or unconsciously achieved, depended on certain qualities which all the ´builders´ possessed, though they combined them in varying proportions. King Alfred, by reason both of his station and his circumstances - and possibly also of his native genius - stands alone; but I think that, because of the qualities which all had in common, any one of the last five could successfully have filled the position and done the work of any of the others - granted, of course, a similar training.
