They have been culled at random, and no definite order has been adhered to. The only alterations made in the text have been omissions of a line or two here and there, referring usually to matters not included in this volume. They are very few in number. The punctuation has been modernized throughout. The first number of The Tatler is dated April 12, 1709; the last (No. 271), January 2, 1711. It was issued three times a week, and was succeeded on March 1, 1711, by The Spectator. At the time when he edited The Tatler Steele was living in Shire (or Sheer) Lane - a street that extended between Carey Street and the Strand, and ran roughly parallel to Chancery Lane.
