All that the Editor can say on this head is that, having a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole of De Quincey´s writings, he has chosen very deliberately, and that he believes his choice to be justified by the already ascertained degrees of popularity of the several Essays chosen, relatively to others of De Quincey´s of the same general kind. De Quincey´s critical and speculative writings, it will be understood, are not represented in these pages; and the volume specially known as The Confessions Of An English Opium-Eater has been left out of the account.
