When death has withdrawn a person from our immediate contact, all the prejudices and prepossessions attacht to him, it would seem to be supposed, must die away; and he rises above the mists and vapours of the earth into the clear, cold sky, where people see him as he is. Yet there are divers causes and motives which retard the formation of such a right judgement, it may be for centuries. When a man has taken a leading part in the conflicts of his age, it will often happen that, as those conflicts may themselves be prolonged from generation to generation, the feelings with which he was regarded during his life, will cluster around him after his death.
