Excerpt from A Life of Mr. Yukichi Fukuzawa The materials for this book have been drawn from Mr. Fukuzawa´s "Autobiography," his "Complete Works," and the Aitôroku or "In Memoriam of Mr. Fukuzawa"; and some passages have been borrowed from Dr. Murray´s "Japan." The chapter on the Keiô Gijuku may seem somewhat too long; but I beg the reader to remember that the history of the institution abounds in instructive incidents, and the character and principles of its venerable founder are shown with advantage in this chapter. I am much indebted for some valuable suggestions to Mr. R. Kitagawa, editor of the Jiji Shimpô; and I have also to thank Prof. Dening for courtesies extended by him.
