Excerpt from Certain Sermons or Homilies: Appointed to Be Read in Churches in the Time of Queen Elizabeth of Famous Memory It appears that so early as the year 1540, "Postilles or Homilies upon the Epistles and Gospels," with certain "Sermons drawen forth by dyverse lerned men for the instruction of all good Christian persons and in especiall of Prestes and Curates," were printed by royal allowance; and that in the year 1542 the Convocation had decided on putting forth a Book of Homilies to "stay such errors as were then by ignorant preachers sparkled among the people." But it was not until the year 1547 that the object contemplated by Convocation was carried into effect. The chief mover in that business was Archbishop Cranmer, who, besides giving his own time and labour to the work, took great pains to secure the co-operation of his brother-prelates. By this means a series of Homilies was composed, which were "imprinted in parts," collected into a Volume, and placed in the hands of the parochial Clergy; "that all Curates of what learning so ever they might be, might have some godly and fruitful lessons in readiness to read and declare unto their parishioners, for their edifying, instruction and comfort."
