As there is no air or water in the moon there is nothing to oxidize or corrode the surface of the steel, and it would therefore remain as immune from deterioration or decomposition as if sealed up in a vacuum. But take a plant or an animal from the earth to the moon and the plant or animal would immediately perish. All organic life, whether animal or vegetable, requires for its development and maintenance the constant absorption and assimilation of external elements. Air and water and food are indispensable. And it follows as a matter of course that the organism must have the faculty of selecting the needful elements in order to supply its wants.
