Excerpt from The Claims of the Study of Colonial History Upon the Attention of the University of Oxford: An Inaugural Lecture Delivered on April 28, 1906 The occupant of the new chair, which the prescient generosity of Mr. Beit has founded at this University, cannot but enter upon his task with a most serious sense of responsibility. Were the success of the new departure to depend upon the capacities of the holder of the chair the prospect would be disquieting; but the invitation and the opportunities afforded by Oxford for special study may well foster into life the seeds of even defective teaching. It is true, of course, that the Oxford curriculum has in the past recognized to some extent the subject of Colonial history, but I understand that such attention has been intermittent and directed to decisive events, such as the struggle between Montcalm and Wolfe; and that the details of the general history have not been, for the most part, much considered. Teaching of necessity follows to some extent the bent of the teacher; and none of the eminent history tutors, who are conferring distinction on modern Oxford, has, I believe, chosen as his special preserve this subject. It so happened that by a tragic coincidence, not long before the announcement of this foundation, a brilliant Oxford historian was cut down in the prime of life, who might have conferred special distinction on this chair.
