Excerpt from History of the Medical Teaching in Trinity College Dublin: And of the School of Physic in Ireland In preparing this record of the teaching of Medicine in Trinity College and in the School of Physic in Ireland, my chief object has been to present an accurate narrative of the events in the history of the School and in the lives of those who have been responsible for its management. To write a complete history of the Medical School would involve a history of Medicine during the past two hundred and fifty years. The limitations imposed on me made the accomplishment of such a task impossible, and consequently I have contented myself with merely indicating some of those points in which the work of the teachers in the School has been in the van of medical progress. The time of the Professors was so fully occupied with teaching, and with the details of school management that little opportunity was left them for original research. That so many of them have been able to earn for themselves places in the history of medicine proves that the title of the ´silent sister´, so often given to Trinity College, is not altogether justified in the case of the School of Physic.
