Excerpt from A Discourse on Colonial Slavery The subject to which your attention is now requested, is Colonial Slavery - a subject on which the public mind is highly excited, though not yet sufficiently so, and in which we are, as Britons, peculiarly interested; not only on behalf of our national character, and our Christian profession, but as being participators of the produce of Slavery, and as having the power, as a nation, over its continuance or abolition in the Colonies of Great Britain. If this view of the subject should seem to bear any thing of a political aspect, I beg to observe, that we do not intend to treat the subject politically. This, I conceive, is neither the time nor the place for that - but we may observe, that that course of policy which is founded in injustice, cruelty, and oppression, can have no correspondence with truth, and no foundation in Christianity.
