F. - They are both water in a state of vapour, frozen in the upper regions of the atmosphere. D. - But snow is a beautiful feathery thing, light, soft and delightful to look at; while hail is in ugly, mishapen heavy lumps. If they both are the same thing, and produced by the same cause, why are they so different in shape and appearance? F. - It is not easy, indeed, to account for this difference, which has puzzled philosophers. Some say it is caused by what is called electricity, which occasions the particles of water to attract one another together, so as to form lumps: and it is certain, that if hail be accompanied by a thunder-storm, which is now found to be the same as electricity, the stones will be much larger than on ordinary occasions.
