Excerpt from The Naval Chronicle, or Voyages, Vol. 3: Travels, Expeditions, Remarkable Exploits, and Atchievements of the Most Celebrated English Navigators, Travellers, and Sea-Commanders, From the Earliest Accounts to the End of the Year 1759 The 5th of October he set Sail, and continued failing till the 10th, when Sir John Munden, with his Squadron, parted from him, and made the best of his Way back to England, while the Admiral continued his Course for the West-Indies, and arrived at Barbadoes the 3d of November, where he left a Fourth-rate, to follow the Governor´s Orders, till another arrived from England. The 8th, he arrived at Martinico; and, the next Day, came to an Anchor in Prince Rupert´s Bay, on the North Weft of Dominica, where he supplied himself with Water and other Refreshments. From thence, arriving at Mevis, he found the Leeward Islands in so good a Condition, that they wanted no immediate Assistance from him upon which he proceeded to Jamaica, and came there the 5th of December, and anchor´d in Port-Royal Harbour, where he found two Men of War, a Fifth and Sixth Rate. Toward the latter End of January, Brigadier General Selwin arrived at his Government of Jamaica, and with him one Fourth, one Fifth, and one Sixth Rate, a Fire-ship, and three Vessels with Naval Ordnance Stores. By these Ships, the Vice-Admiral received Intelligence, that a French Squadron arrived at Martinico about two Months before, and that they were considerably stronger than ours; upon which the Governor and Council of Jamaica provided two Fire-ships, at their own Expence, for their better Safety.
