Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Discourse Preached in the Plymouth Congregational Church of Chicago: Sabbath Afternoon, June 1, 1856 "And the king of the South shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, eves with the king of the north; and at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him, and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships, and he shall enter into the countries and shall overflow and pass over." - Dan. xi, 11, 40. In this chapter the prophet foretells with great accuracy the mighty conquests of Alexander, the division of his realm, at his death, not in his family, but among his four generals, and then the final subsidence of these four empires into two great rivals. These two kingdoms were Egypt and Syria, with their dependencies. Egypt was ruled by the line of kings called the "Ptolemies," and Syria by the "Selencidæ, the sons of Selencus. Egypt, from its location, was called the South, and Syria the North. In this chapter the prophet further describes the continual contests going on between the South kingdom and the North kingdom, through several generations of kings. Our text represents the South as offensive and aggressive, and the North at first forbearing, at last roused up, and then overwhelmingly victorious in defense and protection.
