Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Evidences of Christianity We live in an age when happily standard literature is brought within the reach of the humblest means. Hence it will be matter for rejoicing and congratulation that a series of religious and theological handbooks is now, for the first time, offered to the masses of the people who, while reading with intelligence and with a thirst for knowledge, find the question of expense a subject for consideration. All who take a serious interest in the cultivation and just application of those powers which the new Education Acts are so powerfully developing, will wish well to this enterprise. "´Paley´s Evidences for a shilling! an excellent idea!" is the exclamation frequently heard by the editor to whom Messrs. Ward, Lock, and Co. have kindly entrusted the preparation of this wonderful work; perhaps the most remarkable that has proceeded from the pen of one of the profoundest and acutest writers in a shallow and unthinking age. The "Evidences of Christianity" will necessarily be read at this time under a different aspect and with very different feelings from those which prevailed on its first appearance. Paley´s life was cast in an age of cold and almost heartless reasoning animated by a bias generally unfriendly to religion, and decidedly opposed to revelation. The fervent religious spirit of Wesley had not yet begun to stir the multitudes and to rouse them from their chilly apathy to the concerns of eternity. The pernicious influence of a licentious literature was but feebly encountered by the dry and passionless moral lectures which were the unspiritual bread on which our forefathers failed to feed their souls. The appeal to Reason is not to be treated with disdain. We would be far from undervaluing that final court of appeal, before which, after all, our opinions and our impressions must look for guidance; but only let that Reason be subject to Wisdom, and not exalted into an infallible guide, or be regarded as the obsequious attendant upon that too highly belauded instrument described by the modern rationalistic school as the true test of modern criticism. The return of the Stuarts brought in its train a reaction of licentiousness and buffoonery after the rigid preciseness and the bigotry of Puritan rule. If many of those who passed for religious under the iron despotism of Cromwell were justly chargeable with hypocrisy, certainly there was none to be laid to the charge of the wild and reckless characters who set the fashion of depravity under the Restoration and to the generation following.
