The author remarks, in his preface, that he has been particularly employed in the business for thirty-four years, having conducted all its branches in one of the largest ateliers in Paris, in the British government works, Woolwich, and in the Penn Works, Philadelphia. A large proportion of the work is made up from papers, contributed by the author to different mechanical and scientifical publications, which have been revised for the purpose; but though, to a great extent, the production of a single mind, there appears no effort throughout the body of the work to claim originality for the various receipts and valuable information furnished.
