Excerpt from Syllabus for Physical Education in the Schools of Rhode Island It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: Section 1. All children above the age of eight years, attending public schools or such other schools as are managed and controlled by the state shall receive therein instruction and practice in physical training under such regulations as the state board of education may prescribe or approve during periods which shall average at least twenty minutes in each school day. No private school or private instruction shall be approved by any school committee for the purposes of Chapter 72 of the General Laws as substantially equivalent to that required by law of a child attending a public school in the same city and town unless instruction and practice in physical training similar to that required in public schools shall be given. Sec. 2. For the purpose of preparing and introducing such course of instruction, the sum of five hundred dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, is hereby appropriated out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated for expenditure by the state board of education during the fiscal year ending on December 31, 1917, and the state auditor is hereby directed to draw his orders on the general treasurer for the payment of said sum or so much thereof as may be required, on vouchers approved by said state board of education.
