Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Church of England, Vol. 2: A History for the People; The Mediæval Church The reader of this History may perhaps sometimes feel surprised that now and again the purely ecclesiastical story should be apparently interrupted by what may seem to him only secular matters. But we are travelling during this period over a comparatively little known district of history, when names of kings and bishops suggest but little to the reader, and in themselves possess little or no meaning. To have passed from Alfred and his archbishop Plegmund to the work of Dunstan, without a short sketch of the great kings who intervened between these two periods, would have been at once confusing and misleading. At an earlier stage, to have painted the desolation which the great Viking raids brought upon the church and state of England, without telling who and what these Vikings were, and whit a stern spirit of hatred to Christ and His religion inspired their fierce war-bands, would have given but a maimed and distorted narrative at best, and have presented a totally inadequate view of the work of noble and religious Alfred. So here, to have written about Canute and his times, and the powerful influence which English Christianity had upon the great northern monarch who so strangely came to sit upon the throne of Alfred, and so ably took up his work among us, would have been a hopeless and confusing task, without gathering up the threads of the history which tell us how it came to pass that the northern Viking entered into the inheritance he ruled so well.
