The Regius Greek Professor of the years from 1855 to 1893 had triumphantly ´lived down´ the obloquy which, from conscientious motives, had been commenced by a former Canon of Christ Church, and promulgated by a former Bishop of Oxford. His greatness as an educational and moral force could no longer be gainsaid; and his place in the literature of scholar ship had been secured by his translations of Plato and Thucydides.
