We live, my mother and I, in one of those small squares which abound in South Kensington, at a distance which makes it possible for me, at my rate of walking (which is well under two miles an hour), to get to Kensington Gardens in twenty-five minutes. I usually sit in the Gardens for some time. I like the smell of the grass and the sound of the trees, and it is pleasant to hear the children´s voices. I am rather fond of children, I think. After that I walk home again, and report myself all present and correct for lunch, to the secret surprise and relief of my parent, who has no confidence whatever in my ability to take care of myself, though it pleases her to simulate entire indifference to my welfare. But, after all, why should anyone worry about me? I am well under forty and in perfect condition; and I always have a surprisingly large number of friends and counsellors upon the route.
