Claiborne, Vol. 4: 1801-1816 Sir, I inclose for your perusal and information a Copy of my last letter to the Secretary of War, which, with the Documents inclosed, will acquaint you of the State of things in this quarter. I am sorry that the orders to Major Porter were ever given; but still more so, that they have in any manner been countermanded. Men who form opinions without reflection, and other´s, who on all occasions delight to censure the Conduct of public officers may take exceptions to my present state of Inactivity. But with those, whose good opinion I desire, I shall stand excused, when I observe, that whatever my private opinion or wishes may be, it is impossible for me, to do ought in my public Character, which my Superiors have not sanctioned; unless in cases, where my immediate duty compels me to act. It remains for me to thank you sincerely for the disposition, which you have manifested to render propt assistance to this Territory, in the event of danger; to suggest to yon the expediency of keeping your Militia prepared to take the field at a moments warning, and to assure you of the Confidence and Esteem of &c.
