Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 2 of 2 I mentioned in the last chapter the fact that I had lost the chance of seeing Lord Randolph Churchill in office, because I had to cross the Atlantic and spend some months in the United States and Canada. In 1886 Mr. Gladstone brought forward his first Home Rule measure for Ireland, and as every one knows, the measure was defeated in the House of Commons, because a large number of Liberal members, who had previously followed Mr. Gladstone´s leadership, made up their minds to abandon his guidance, and to join with the Conservatives in opposing his Bill. My colleagues in the Irish National party thought it would be of advantage to our cause if one of us were to go out to the United States and Canada to tell the history of the Home Rule measure and its defeat, and to plead for the sympathy and support of the American and Canadian public on behalf of our national claims. I was asked to undertake the duty; and I did so all the more readily because I had long been contemplating another lecturing tour in America.
