That period may have given Scottish Churchmen a more precise and scholastic compendium of theology; but doubtless it did much to denationalise their Church. English puritanical notions were introduced in the universal effort then made to produce uniformity, which have not only injured us, but have also prejudiced our episcopal neighbours. A liturgy was generally preferred by the Scotch clergy and laity at the Reformation, and accordingly two Books of Common Prayer were successively used in public worship.
