Not only has the population living in cities increased enormously in absolute numbers during the last hundred years throughout the world affected by European civilization; but the proportion of the total population dwelling in cities has increased in almost as remarkable a manner. This is true no matter how we define the expression urban population, so long as we give a reasonable sense to the term. The United States forms a striking example of this development. Owing to the enormous extent of its unoccupied and unsettled territory, and the rapid rate at which it has occupied the wilderness, we should have expected to find simply this tendency to diffusion, but parallel with it has gone a tendency to concentrate in cities.
