Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Lectures on the First and Second Epistles of Peter In bringing before the public a posthumous work of the Rev. John Lillie, D.D., his friends are actuated not only by a desire to erect a fitting monument to his name, but also by the conviction that thereby they will do a good service to the cause of sacred learning and to the Christian pulpit. Dr. Lillie, a Scotchman by birth and an American by adoption, was one of the best classical and biblical scholars of this country. Born December 16th, 1812, at Kelso, he graduated at the University of Edinburgh in 1831 with the first honors of his class; and in public recognition of his subsequent labors in the cause of sacred learning, his Alma Mater conferred upon him, in 1855, the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In 1834, he emigrated, in company with elder members of his family, to the United States, and after completing his theological studies at New Brunswick, N. J., he entered the ministry of the Gospel. He died, after a brief illness, February 23d, 1867, in the prime of life and vigor, as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Kingston, N. Y., universally esteemed and greatly beloved by the people of his charge. Without neglecting his pastoral duties, he was always an enthusiastic and most systematic student, especially of the Bible. For several years he devoted himself exclusively to the critical study of the New Testament, with the help of the most extensive exegetical library of New-York City.
