Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Father Payne It always interests me to find how many of the literary aspirants who ask me to read and comment on their work say that they have no desire to get money or fame, but only wish to do good. It is quite sincerely said, I believe; but what puzzles me is why this should be felt about writing, which is, after all, an artistic pleasure, when no amateur would think or say it about sketching or playing the violin. People who draw, or who make music, recognise it frankly as a source of personal enjoyment, the recording or reproducing of something that has seemed to them beautiful. Even if an amateur does not think his sketch or his performance of a piece of music to be faultlessly beautiful, yet he cherishes a belief that parts of it are excellent, like the curate´s egg; and his wish to show his picture or to have his piece listened to is probably ultimately even more a desire that his skill should be recognised than a philanthropic wish to give or to share pleasure. The aim of writing poems and books is somewhat more complicated. The chief part of it, in the case of people who love books, is the joy of creating for themselves, out of their own words and thoughts, the same sort of artistic structure which they have so enjoyed contemplating and admiring, and which has moved them so strangely, in the pages of beloved writers.
